This photograph shows Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (holding rifle) in the United States in 1863, after his return from an expedition to the source of the Mississippi River.

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in America in 1863.

This image appears in Hans Rozenkranz’s Graf Zeppelin: Die Geschichte eines abenteuerlichen Lebens (Verlag Ullstein, Berlin: 1931).

Yesterday I posted a photograph of Count Zeppelin with Union officers during the American Civil War.

Zeppelin wrote of his visit to the Fairfax Courthouse to visit the German division in XI Corps under the command of Carl Schurz.

The officers in the photograph are identified as: (left to right) Major Ludlow, Captain Ulric Dahlgren (standing), Lieutenant Colonel Dickinson, Zeppelin, and Lieutenant Rosencranz. The accompanying text notes that “the gentleman in foreign uniform is Count Zeppalin (sic), of the Prussian army, then on a visit to this country.”

Tomorrow I will post another photograph of Count von Zeppelin in the United States. Keep an eye on the blog.  🙂

Over the years, many books, articles, and websites — including, until now, this one — have described the following image as a photograph of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin during the American Civil War:

Union Officers during the American Civil War

A blog reader, whose hobby is reenacting Prussian artillery of the Napoleonic period, and who wishes to remain anonymous, very kindly took the time to let me know that the figure usually identified as Count Zeppelin (second from right) is actually a Union Army officer.

The photograph can be found in the collection of the Library of Congress (LC-B811-435A [P&P] LOT 4174). According to the caption it was taken during the Peninsula Campaign of May-August, 1862 (before Zeppelin arrived in America in 1863) and depicts officers of the Horse Artillery commanded by Lt. Col. William Hays: Lt. Robert Clarke, Capt. John C. Tidball, Lt. William N. Dennison, and Capt. Alexander C.M. Pennington.

The same reader also pointed me to a photograph that does depict Count von Zeppelin during the Civil War. I will post it tomorrow. Keep an eye on the blog. 🙂

Giants in the Sky | The Rise and Fall of Airships will be a multimedia, interactive exposition including contemporary artwork, vintage photographs, artifacts, memorabilia, and video.

The museum is located in Silicon Valley near San Jose and Moffett Field, home to the American naval airship U.S.S. Macon.

Among the educational programs will be a talk by my good friend and colleague Dr. Cheryl Ganz, the recently-retired Chief Curator of Philately of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum, who is one of the world’s leading experts on airship history. The date has not been announced.

The New Museum Los Gatos is, literally, a new museum; it opens to the public for the first time on Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Colorized Hindenburg disaster photograph

The Hindenburg disaster, colored by Dana Keller  (click to enlarge)

Several friends and blog readers told me about this colorized image of the Hindenburg disaster and I wanted to share it with anyone who may have missed it.

While it was this image that brought Dana Keller’s work to my attention, all of his work is impressive.  It allows us to see historical figures as real people and thanks to Dana we can imagine having a face-to-face chat with Babe Ruth, Marie Curie, H. G. Wells, or even Lewis Powell in a way that is hard to do with a black-and-white image.

(And Madame Curie was quite a babe, no?  Too soon?)

Seriously, I encourage you to spend some time looking at Dana’s work at History in Color on Facebook, and similar images by Dana and other talented artists can also be seen here and here.

(A final note about this Hindenburg image that should go without saying:  Naturally this should not be used as a historical document illustrating the actual color of the Hindenburg flames for the purpose of analyzing the cause or progress of the fire.  But as a way to imagine what it might have felt like to witness the disaster, Dana’s image is spectacular.)

And on a quick personal note, I apologize that the blog has been so quiet lately; I will try to keep it more lively in the next few months.  🙂
